What is the Conative Method? And how does it relate to Special Educational Needs? Learning any activity follows a structured step-by-step path (Gilles Bui Xuan, 1993). Understanding these stages makes it possible to see why a student behaves in a certain way and to design an educational plan tailored to them.If the teaching method respects their needs and motivations, learning becomes more natural and effective. To help the learner progress, teaching proposals must match their current abilities, but also be stimulating enough to push them forward. This also applies to motor activity: the development of skills follows precise stages that mark the student’s progress. This educational approach is called conative pedagogy, based on the concept of conation (from Spinoza’s conatus), the inner force that drives us to act in pursuit of our goals.Conation is therefore a mix of motivation and will to act, guided by each individual’s personal values. Conative pedagogy focuses not only on cognitive aspects but also on action: the student learns and transforms through what they do. The teacher’s role is to: Define a clear goal for the activity. Structure a teaching path with progressive steps. Observe behaviors to understand where the learner is in the process. Guide them in moving to the next stage, respecting their timing and way of learning. The 5 stages of the conative learning path: Emotional stage: The learner is guided by emotion and still unaware of technique. They express themselves through physical development. Functional stage: They better control emotions and begin to ask “how do I do it?”, testing solutions. Technical stage: They notice that some perform better and try to learn the correct techniques. Contextual stage (technical-functional): They no longer focus only on technique but consider the context and start developing a strategy. Expert stage (creativity): They have gained experience and autonomy, combining skills to develop their personal style. This model applies to any type of learning, whether motor or cognitive. A further development of conative pedagogy is metaconative pedagogy, which helps the student become aware of their own learning process, making them more autonomous and responsible for their growth. The Conative Approach in Riccardo Coppari’s “Perfect Method” In his book Perfect Method, Riccardo Coppari deepens the concept of conative pedagogy through the practice of Judo. This discipline is not only seen as a martial art but also as an educational path that develops inner strength, discipline, and self-awareness. The innovative aspect of the Perfect Method lies in its universal application: thanks to conative pedagogical strategies, Judo becomes a tool for growth accessible to everyone, regardless of physical or cognitive abilities. The exercises and methodologies proposed by Coppari are based on the idea that each individual has their own learning path, guided by personal motivation and the will to improve. A Method for Everyone One of the key elements of the Perfect Method is its inclusiveness. Conative pedagogy does not impose a single way of learning but adapts to the uniqueness of each practitioner. This proves particularly useful for those with Special Educational Needs, as it allows the creation of tailored learning paths that respect individual requirements and foster balanced growth. In conclusion, the Conative Method and its application in Judo represent an opportunity to rediscover the importance of willpower in learning. Thanks to Coppari’s approach, this methodology not only helps develop technical skills but also provides valuable tools to face life’s challenges with determination and self-confidence.
